About Us

Victoria Hash House Harriers was started in Digana, Sri Lanka on the 13th March 1982.

Not far from Kandy, Digana was the special township built to house the workers constructing the Victoria Dam and Power Station in the years 1981-1987.

The inspiration for the Victoria Hash came from the experiences of Diganites running at weekends with the Colombo Hash in different parts of Sri Lanka- Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee.  These were family occasions, very different from the macho hard drinking Monday night excursions of the Colombo Hash.

As there were many with young families in Digana, this gave a group of us the idea of starting a weekend based Victoria Hash which would be for all the family- hence all our hashes had lemonade runs (ostensibly for the children but in fact more for the “knitting circle” of walking Mums who could discuss the goings on at Digane without fear of being overheard).

Superstar remembers that first hash.
The first On-On started from No 46, Digana Village, home of John and Melinda Crosfield, with approximately 25 runners game for this novel activity, the field being swelled by a number of Colombo Hashers, including the Secretary, Mike Hill, and his wife Helen.

The Pied Piper (Peter Hughes) led the pack out of the gates and into the plantations above the village. Even at this stage there was evidence of tampering with the trail by local youth who objected to the paper hieroglyphics distributed around the footpaths. The hares, John Crosfield,(Superstar) Simon Bailey (Deep Throat), David Scivier (Drag Queen) and Alan Jones had abandoned their wheels to join the rear of the pack and pick up the stragglers.

The trail ran through plantations of coconuts with odd dwellings encountered amongst the palms- and, of course, there were many lengthy falsies to be investigated. After many deviations, the pack returned to the village through the back fence, and a down –down was duly held to toast the Hares

After the Victoria Dam was completed and the majority of workers repatriated to home turf, it was decided to continue with VH3 in exile with reunion hashes back in the United Kingdom. The first Reunion Hash took place in 1989 so here we are today in our third decade of Reunion hashes

A word or two on the VH3 reunion History by our very own Bumble

Now with the years progressing, so too are the knee injuries and inablility to run long distances. So the hashes have turned into bashes with the majority of hashers now using bikes and enjoying the riding, while taking in the beautiful and sometimes challenging terrain that the UK has to offer..
